Nurturing Spiritual Growth And Fostering Harmony Through Community Living

Life at Kaivalya Yoga and Ayurveda Seva Trust (in short KYAST) is based on the philosophy of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ rooted in Sanathana Dharma – the foundation principle implying that ‘The whole world is one family’ and all are equal. This philosophy functions through its core values of ‘Sahajeevana’ i.e. community living and ‘Samabhava’ i.e. equanimity – a common feature in the earlier days before the influence of imperialism and modernization took hold of our land, watering down our traditional values. Traces of such large joint families based on this principle are still found in some parts of our country. The founders of KYAST aspire to bring back the system of ‘Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam’ – living together as a community wherein everyone works to uplift the value systems of equality, equanimity and spirituality making life on earth a ‘virtual heaven’.

Samarpana

‘Samarpana’ means offering all our possessions to God, and take only what we need. Even today in temples of India the devotees offer whatever they have to the Lord and after the worship they receive a small portion back as ‘Prasada’. The real meaning or essence of ‘Samarpana’ or ‘Prasada bhava’ is to surrender our ego to God and accept whatever is given without the feeling of ‘me’ and ‘mine’. Everyday life at Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam begins with the ritual of Samarpana at the Krishna temple in the ashram. An offering of special dish is made to Lord Krishna through Pooja and is distributed to everyone as ‘Prasada’ at breakfast. This ritual when followed with full faith is believed to purify our minds as it sheds the layers of  our ego complexes.

Yoga

All human beings are a combination of matter and spirit (Prakruthi and Purusha). The only goal of human life is to uplift the material layers and become more spiritual which is achieved through Yoga. Yoga is not just doing a few asanas or physical exercises. The real meaning of the word ‘Yoga’ is Union (to join) the matter with the spirit. Yoga was originally expounded by Pathanjali muni about 7000 years ago and has eight limbs in the form of Ashtanga Yoga.

The eight limbs are Yama, Niyama, Asana, Pranayama, Prathyahara, Dharana, Dhyana and Samadhi. Yama are five ethical rules or restrictions such as Ahimsa (non-violence), Sathya (truthfulness) Astheya (restrain from theft) Aparigraha (restrain from hoarding) and Brahmacharya (celibacy). Niyma include five rules such as Soucha (cleanliness), Samadhana (contentment), Swadhyaya (self-study), Iswara Pranidhana (complete belief in God) and Thapas (austerity). Asana means holding the body in particular posture to improve circulation and strengthening of the body. Pranayama is the regulation of prana-breath. The regular practice of Pranayama makes our breath natural and rhythmic leading to improvement in our health. Prathyahara is the withdrawal of mind from sense objects. It can be practiced by leading a simple and moderate life. Dharana means concentration or focus. Dhyana means meditation or contemplation. Samadhi is the final stage of absorption of one’s mind in Atman or God when one merges with the divine consciousness.

Meditation - Dhyana

In Vasudhaiva Kutumbakam the residents are initiated to simple ways of daily practice of all aspects of Yoga like Asana, Pranayama and Dhyana to take them to higher levels of consciousness helping them improve their health and spiritual well-being.

To support these spiritual activities the ashram has a dedicated Dhyana Mandira (meditation hall) of around 800 sq.ft in which around 40-50 people can meditate at a time and can also be used for yogasana practice, bhajans and satsang. It has a spiritual library with wide range of spiritual and philosophical books for all ages. The meditation hall is also equipped with audio visual support system that can be used for discourses and presentations on spirituality and philosophy.
